The word Allemande (from the French word meaning "German") is a musical term for a type of dance, it usually was the first dance of an instrumental suite and is called Allemande as a reference to the dance which was thought popular in Germany at the time. In fact it was a very popular dance that had become established and carried on from the Renaissance period. Just as the piece above, the Allemande was typically recited with a moderate tempo and could commence with any beat of the bar. In short, the dancers made a line of couples, extended their held hands forward, and paraded up and down the room, making three steps, then balancing on one foot.
