Born in Liège, Belgium, in the year of 1822, César Auguste Jean Guillaume Hubert Franck was nurtured from a young age by his father to become a concert pianist. Studying first at the conservatoire in Liège and then in the Paris Conservatoire Franck settled in Paris but gave up designs to be a concert pianist, a decision that did not please his father.

Supporting himself by teaching piano privately Franck began developing his technique as an organist and improviser and in 1858 became the organist for Saint Clotilde Basilica. He maintained this position until his death in 1890. Franck had a good reputation as an improviser on the organ and his compositions also started to become popular, the Grande Pièce Symphonique being one of his fist pieces to be published (1868). Franck went on to be regarded as one the figures in Romantic music and is very highly regarded as a composer for the Organ while influencing music in general with his use of cyclic form. Works of great note include Symphony in D minor and the Symphonic Variations for piano and orchestra. His best known short piece is Panis Angelicus.
