With the original meaning of the term translating to a ‘misshapen pearl’ this bright and melodic genre saw composers, such as Johann Sebastian Bach (cited by many as one of the greatest composers of all time in the Western tradition) George Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, George Philipp Telemann, Arcangelo Corelli, Henry Purcell, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Giovanni Battista Sammartini at the musical forefront.
New playing techniques, the advance of efficient tonality, new intricate musical arrangements, and adapted musical notations were pioneered (still surviving to this day). Opera was to become an established musical genre and instruments like the Baroque trumpet, Baroque guitar, Harpsichord, Lute, Baroque violin, Oboe da caccia and Viol Viola d'amore were mirror the mood of the period whilst colouring its musical landscape.
