Bossa Nova evolved from Samba music but is typically more complex harmonically and is less percussive and it is also more influenced by Jazz particularly jazz styles such as cool jazz. Originating in Brazil,bossa nova began to develop in the late nineteen fifties by João Gilberto,Vinícius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim (music).
The unforgettable Getz/Gilberto recording "The Girl From Ipanema" perhaps defined the Bossa Nova genre and was covered by numerous artists. An early influence of bossa nova was Henri Salvador's "Dans mon île" which was featured in the 1957 Italian film IEuropa di notte by Alessandro Blasetti. The 1959 film Black Orpheus brought huge popularity top Bossa Nova in Brazil and in Latin America then spreading to the USA by way of touring US musicians. Charlie Byrd and Stan Getz help popularize Bossa Nova as did Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.
