The original Tango is called the Argentine Tango is a social dance and a genre of music originating in Argentine amongst the European immigrant populations and started out as street music. It then also became popular Uruguay and then to the rest of the world. Many years of evolution led to what is regarded as a ‘Golden Age’ in Tango music beginning around 1930 and drawing to a close at the end of the Second World War. Ballroom Tango is a later derivation of the Argentine Tango. Argentine Tango itself covers of a variety of styles that each developed in different regions and times in Argentina, and interesting factors of individual developments were how crowded a dance hall might be and even the fashions of the clothes the dancers were wearing. North America and Europe also influenced the development of the Tango; Cuba and Spain both had early versions of the Tango and flamenco Tangos dance and it is quite likely that an older minuet-style European dance dating back to the 1700s was some form of precursor to the Spanish and Cuban forms. All the confusion and overlapping between the styles as they are now danced means the Tango continues to evolve.
The Argentine Tango is danced in an embrace that sometimes is very open, where the leader and follower connect at arms length, and sometimes very closed, where the connection is chest-to-chest, and of course the Tango can also be any where between these two extremes or anywhere in between. Close embrace is often associated with the more traditional styles, while open embrace leaves room for many of the embellishments and figures that are associated with Tango Nuevo. Tango is essentially walking with a partner and the music. Musicality (i.e. dancing appropriately to the emotion and speed of a tango) is an extremely important element of dancing tango. A good dancer is one who lets you visualise the music. Generally dancers keep their feet close to the floor as they walk with the ankles and knees brushing as one leg passes the other.
