| Funk, an American based genre with mid to late 1960s origins, is often cited as a fusing of African American musicians with soul, jazz and R&B. This harmonious marriage resulted in a highly rhythmic style of music where a standard melody can take a back seat with the bass guitar and drums taking the lead.
As with its musical cousins a traditional band line up electric guitar, electric bass, organ (a Hammond is often favoured) and drums have been employed in this style, as have the horn section of saxophones, trumpets and trombones.
Many great artists have pioneered and led to the popularity of this genre, one in which songs could be born from a one chord jam, although James Brown is perhaps the most popular and widely cited. The Meters, Bootsy Collins, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, Curtis Mayfield, The Funk Brothers, George Porter Jr, Sly and the Family Stone, Earth, Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang, and more recently Prince, are names which also deserve credit in the funk music arena; a genre that would go on to play a huge influence on disco, and whose heritage can still be felt today via house, hip-hop and samples galore.
