This instrumental version of "Greensleeves" is set to a moderate tempo and is played on the classical guitar. The running time for this piece of music is one minute and fifty six seconds. Greensleeves is believed to have been written at sometime in the 1580s or at least first published at that time by the London Stationer's Company and was titled "A New Northern Dittye of the Lady Greene Sleeves". It was also known by different names such as "A New Courtly Sonnet of the Lady Green Sleeves. To the new tune of Green sleeves.": See Extract below.
Perhaps one of the most interesting unproven facts about Greensleeves is that King Henry VIII (1491-1547) composed it as a dedication to one of his wives to be, Anne Boleyn. Disappointingly it would seem that old Henry did not coin the tune as its particular style was not known of in England until long after the King had passed away.
