Jazz fusion or Fusion is also termed jazz rock. It came about in the late nineteen sixties from mixing jazz elements such as improvisation with grooves and beats of funk and R&B and and also the heavy electrified sounds from Rock Music. Jazz rock was obviously the more rock end of the spectrum and this helped spawn progressive rock. By the early nineteen eighties Jazz fusion tree had several branches, some very improvisational and experimental with groups using electronica, hip hop, and heavy metal to augemt their sound and also some very mainstream branches. So Fusion is a catch all, as its name suggests it moulds new sounds by bringing together previously separate music genres and styles. Most of the Fusion is instrumental and can feature complex time signatures, metres, rhythmic patterns. Tracks can continue much longer that a mainstream pop song with lengthy solo improvisations prominently featuring. Fusion musicians usually have a very high level of musical competence, some being very talented virtuosos such as Pat Metheny, miles Davis or Jaco Pastorius.
