Ragtime is musical style which is large defined as having a syncopated melody (this is usually in a 2/4 time signature although not essential) sitting on top of a regular march tempo bass line. It is most commonly cited of a piano based genre flourishing in popularity from the tail end of the nineteenth century up until the Second World War.
Undoubtedly the master of this musical form was Scott Joplin (born in 1868 in Texas) who became known as ‘The King of Ragtime.’ Joplin was one of the most important developers of the genre and is often cited as its originator.
Ragtime would go onto influence a generation of jazz musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton and a 1940s revival would eventually lead to the genre coming to wider acclaim when featuring heavily in the 1973 film ‘The Sting.’ The soundtrack, with Scott Joplin’s ‘The Entertainer’ playing a prominent role, would once again put Ragtime on the musical map.
