The Carol "Silent Night" is Austrian in its origins and was first performed publicly in the Nicola-Kirche in Oberndorf, Austria on Christmas Eve, 1818. Father Josef Mohr composed the lyrics in 1816, and Austrian headmaster Franz Xaver Gruber wrote the melody and guitar accompaniment apparently the same day as the Carol's first performance.
