|The Tango is a genre of music originating amongst the European immigrant populations of Uruguay and Argentina, starting out as street music. Many years of evolution led to what is regarded as a ‘Golden Age’ in Tango music beginning around 1930 and drawing to a close at the end of the Second World War.
It was during this period that the genre, traditionally played by a sextet including two bandoneons, two violins, a double bass and a piano, would see some of most popular orchestra’s in the US including the Tango in its repertoire. Tango music would also receive classical cross over interpretations with Jorge Chaminé recording alongside bandoneonist Olivier Manoury. The likes of Plácido Domingo, Gidon Kremer, Daniel Barenboim, and Marcelo Alvarez have also added their contributions to the Tango music canon, a form know for its rich textures.
And with names like Alfredo de Angelis, Pedro Laurenz, Rodolfo Biagi, Miguel Calo, Domingo Federico, Roberto Firpo, Franciso Canaro, Mendizábal, Villoldo, Matos Rodríguez, D'Agostino Vargas, Di Sarli, Mores, Arolas, Discepolo, Stravinsky, Ástor Piazzolla, Carlos Gardel and more recently John Cage, producing Tango music the genre looks set to be enthralling dancers and music lovers alike for some time to come.
