Almost certainly the most famous piece of Ragtime music ever written it rediscovered popularity in the 1970s Ragtime revival solely because of its use as the theme tune for the Oscar winning film The Sting which starred Robert Redford. It is quite common to hear ice cream vans in the USA playing The Entertainer as they entice clients to buy their produce. The Entertainer is sub-titled "A rag time two step" which was a popular dance at in years leading up to the First World War.

Scott Joplin (1867-1917) was an American pianist and composer from Texas. He composed ragtime music. Scott Joplin is seen as one of the principal composers of Ragtime together with James Scott and Joseph Lamb. His first successful composition was Maple Leaf Rag which sold over one million copies. He then went on to write several more very famous pieces such as "Elite Syncopations", "March Majestic","Ragtime Dance" and, of course, "The Entertainer". Despite faltering health he continued writing and publishing music almost up until his death in 1917.
Ragtime is an American music genre which was very popular between 1896 and 1918
and it is considered the first truly American music genre. Starting as dance music in the brothels of St. Louis and New Orleans, Ragtime evolved from March music and incorporated polyrhythms that came African music. In 1899 The ragtime piece "Maple Leaf Rag", composed by Scott Joplin and published in 1899, heavily influenced other ragtime composers with its melodies, harmonic progressions and metric patterns. Several other major hits followed for Scott Joplin including The Entertainer which became famous again in the 1970s Ragtime revival.
