The word Waltz is derived from the old German verb: walzen, which means to turn, roll, or glide. The dance itself seems to have origins in mountainous rural areas of Austria and Bavaria and also in the suburbs of Vienna. It dates back far back as the seventeenth century. The simple melodies and tunes that accompanied this early form of the waltz, usually sung or yodeled, also survived and provide the basic theme for many pieces of Waltz music. Franz Lanner and Johann Strauss were very popular composers for the Waltz during the Nineteenth century and the Waltz became very popular in the Western world. The basic Waltz is danced in 3/4 time with accent on the first beat and a basic pattern of step-step-close. The Waltz is still a popular dance and the two principal dances today main are the Modern Waltz and the Viennese (Quick) Waltz.
