World Music

Ethnomusicologist, Robert E. Brown coined the phrase in the nineteen sixties but it was not until the nineteen eighties when the first WOMAD concerts began to highlight World Music in the Western world, this coincided with strong market campaigns from the record companies who were looking to expand their markets and musical horizons. Paul Simon's Graceland was a hugely successful album that perhaps highlighted the mixing of both Western and non-Western musical components and styles. Other famous Western musicians such as Peter Gabriel and South African born Johnny Clegg also worked to bring non-Western styles to a larger and Western audience.
